John Lartey Botcheway was born to Mr. Francis Tetteh Botcheway and Ms. Elizabeth Kwajakie Gbenatey. He was enstooled as the Asafoatse Bantama Lartey of the Asafoaste Bantama clan in the Ningo-Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region. As a traditional warlord, he holds a significant role in the Prampram Traditional Area.

The Prampram Traditional Area has a rich history of traditional leadership, with recent developments including the enstoolment of new Asafoatse and Asafoanye by the Naazen family. These appointments are part of ongoing efforts to reassign vacant traditional positions to rightful heirs, ensuring the preservation of cultural heritage and the promotion of unity and development within the community.

Indeed, Asafoatse Lartey Bantama IV, who took over the reign in 2021, has become synonymous with self-help development within the community.

The title “Bantama” has historical roots in Ghana, notably in the Asante kingdom, where Bantama is one of the traditional quarters of the Kumasi Traditional Council. In the Prampram context, the Asafoatse Bantama throne embodies the community’s dedication to preserving its unique cultural identity and governance structures.

The title “Asafoatse” refers to a warlord or leader of a warrior group, a role deeply rooted in the Ga-Dangme cultural heritage. The Bantama stool, in particular, is associated with one of the key quarters or clans in Prampram, reflecting a lineage of leadership and responsibility.
